Chinese Lanterns (Demonstration – Basic Shape)

This is a project that was initiated by a colleague's friend who was working in Northern Ireland. The idea was to make lanterns (since my students already knew how to) and make a video that would be streamed online so that more viewers in Northern Ireland can get to view the lantern-making process. The lanterns would be used during Chinese New Year in Northern Ireland, and would decorate St George's Market and City Hall in Belfast City Centre. This is the demonstration segment (of the shape of the basic type of lantern that was shot. There is 1 other demonstration segment and 1 presentation segment.

i found out that you do not fold the four corners together. You have to fold its so all corners are touching so there wont be holes. I finished mine yesterday thanks for the help =D

Depends on what type of variations you make to the basic pattern, but as a general guide, I think you need at least around 25 – 35 packets… more if your designs are more complicated and your lantern bigger…

It’s not meant to be lit… you’re supposed to just hang it as a decoration…

You should be able to purchase the paper easily in Chinatowns around the world. Or get some Chinese friends to send you the empty red packets… we have lots of these during Chinese New Year!
